Sulfasalazine is a prodrug of the anti-inflammatory agent 5-aminosalicylic acid that is covalently linked to the antibiotic
sulfapyridine by an azo bond. This bond is rapidly cleaved by bacteria in the terminal ileum and colon, thus releasing the active
