Allopurinol, sold under the brand name Zyloprim and generics, is a medication used primarily to treat excess uric acid in the blood and its complications, including chronic gout. It is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor and is administered orally.
It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, a list of the most important medication needed in a basic health system.
Application
Antigout drugs are used for the treatment of gout, gout nephropathy, etc. They are mainly used in the interlude and chronic phase of gout. They are suitable for the control of hyperuricemia in patients with primary and secondary gout who have excessive uric acid production, are allergic or ineffective to uric acid excretion drugs, and are not suitable to use uric acid excretion drugs (such as renal insufficiency). This medicine can also be used in combination with uric acid effluents to enhance the curative effect, especially for patients with severe gouty stone but good renal function.
